Climbing the walls

The IBM sim has long been more than just a set of sandboxes.  The latest project being incubated at an IBM sim is a tribute to M.C. Escher’s “House of Stairs” in the form of a giant stone castle.  Not just a painting, but an actual build, where you can walk down the stairs, find yourself going up the stairs, and then fall sideways onto the roof.  Courtesy of Colin Fizgig.  Thank you, sir!

Can you say “Neato Peachy Keen”?  I thought you could!

The build is still in development but it’s already fun and cool and a marvel and rather confusing.  So go!  The LM/SLURL is rather wonky, so fly once you get there and be prepared to circle.  But you can make your way into the stony, dizzying goodness.

Open the pages, feel the steampunk

If you are in any way crafty or DIY, you may already hug Make Magazine to your bosom.  If not, dip your metaphorical toes in an issue — such as Issue 17, on newsstands right now, that is devoted to steampunk.

The “Lost Knowledge” issue — full of wonder, whimsy and plenty of Jake Von Slatt.  You use his instructions to build a Wimhurst generator, or just watch him build pretty, pretty things on MakeTV.  And then there’s the articles about modern wonder cabinets … le sigh.

Av making toyz

The silly typist went and got a cold, so she’s quarantining herself before going to see Watchmen.  Me … I get to play!  And I’ve been dragged to quite a wonderful place.  Unknowable, Alien Isles — home of Madcow Cosmos‘s latest experiment – building your own alien av.

It’s rather simple, so much fun and just demented.  Such a NPIRL thing to do.

Prim-killer artist Spiral Walcher brought me there and I just STARED at the machine for a while.  Then I figured out which button to push and I went to town, during which time Madcow himself showed up.  After I exclaimed “ZOMG! So Cool! Come See!” in Caledon Chat, a couple of innocent souls came by.

Then … someone broke out the maracas.  The “manbo!” maracas.

It resulted in five very strange creatures dancing to the mambo loop … on and on and on.  Maybe you had to be there.  I will spare your ears and offer photographic proof, as taken by Spiral Walcher.

That’s Martien Pontecorvo, myself, Madcow, Spiral and Gryff Richard, respectively.  Too much fun.  I can’t promise more Manbo!, but it’s your own fault if you don’t like your new little alien body …
